10 least trusted professions
Are you suspicious of politicians? You’re not alone. We reveal the UK’s most distrusted professions.
The Co-operative Bank has conducted research into which professions Brits have the least faith in. Not surprisingly some of the usual suspects made the top 10.
1. Politicians
2. Bankers
3. Journalists
4. Car salesmen
5. Estate agents
6. Electricians
7. Plumbers
8. Builders
9. Car mechanics
10. Footballers
The survey also found that we’re becoming less trusting – with 54 per cent feeling more cynical than a year ago thanks to recession, poor service and the selfishness of society.
Finding somebody you trust
If you’re one of the cynics out there, don’t fret. There are certain ways (although by no means guaranteed) to help you find a reputable profession.
Check with trade body: Several of the professions named and shamed above have trade bodies where they can register. Plumbers, for instance, can register with the Association of Plumbers and Heating Contractors (APHC).To be a member, they will need to adhere to certain guidelines and customers can complain to the APHC if they are not satisfied.
Likewise, the National Association for Estate Agents has a code of conduct for its members. If you’re buying or selling property, it might be a prudent to check your estate agent is registered.
Ask for references: This is especially true if you’re hiring a tradesman to work on your home. Before you commit to anything, ask if you can see photographs of completed work or speak to previous customers.
For more information, see ‘Don’t let a rogue tradesman cost you £1,600’.
Word of mouth: Reputable professionals who have been in the business for a number of years should have established a solid customer base. If you’re in the market for a car mechanic (number nine on the list), you could try asking friends, family and co-workers where they get their motors serviced.
If you’re not satisfied
Whatever precautions you take, it’s a nasty world and you can still encounter an unscrupulous professional. If you’ve exhausted all possible complaints avenues via the company’s customer services, you may need to take your grievance further.
Here are just a few of your options.
Financial Services Ombudsman: If you have an unresolved complaint with your bank, insurance company or any financial firm, the FSO could be your next step.
Press Complaints Commission: With journalists the third least trusted profession, it’s possible you could one day encounter a problem with the press. If you do, the PCC sets out a code of practice for journalists.
Trading Standards: This not-for-profit organisation gives advice to customers dissatisfied with goods and services (including motor vehicles). It should cover most of the professions in the list – although probably not footballers who came in 10th place.
