Are you dating a miser?
Beware of these six signs that your partner needs to loosen the purse strings a little.
Some people can’t stand it when their partner drinks too much, while others get annoyed when their significant other has a roving eye.
For me, the biggest turn off is stinginess. Of course, we’re all for being frugal. However, there is a difference between being financially prudent and just plain cheap. If someone has a decent job and money in the bank, any of this behaviour could be a sign of stinginess.
Letting you freeze
Cutting utilities bills is a great way to save money and we should all be careful not to set the thermostat too high.
Having said that, there are times when the heating needs to be on. Could we have survived the Big Freeze by putting on a jumper and thinking warm thoughts?
If someone refuses to turn the heating on while you sit shivering, he or she may be taking the quest to economise too far.
Buying the cheapest round
You might think a miser would dodge buying drinks but the true skinflint may be more strategic.
Stingy people often buy the round they calculate will be least expensive. This could be the first round before everyone has arrived or a round in a notoriously cheap pub.
Also watch out for the kind of drinks your partner brings back. If you ask for a white wine, do you get the cheapest variety in a small glass?
Anyone who deliberately nips to the loo when it comes time to pay for drinks should be avoided at all costs.
Constantly talking about money
Cutting the cost of your car insurance and shifting your debts onto a balance transfer credit card are some of the smartest financial moves you can make. However, they’re not scintillating topics of conversation on a first date. Avoid these discussions until things get a little more serious.
To split or not to split?
In these post feminist days, most women would be happy to pay half the bill at dinner. However, be careful of any dinner companion who whips out the calculator to work out who owes what.
Refusing to share a mobile phone
Believe it or not, this happened to a friend of mine. Her fiancé wouldn’t let her use his mobile because he wanted to preserve his free minutes. Needless to say, they didn’t make it down the aisle.
Romantic gesture or money saver?
In most cases, home-made cards and romantic nights in are a heartfelt gesture to express affection.
If your other half is cheap, however, he or she may have an ulterior motive in wanting to stay home to watch a film rather than going to the cinema.
