Save money every day of the week
These simple tips could save you hundreds of pounds a month.
It seems that this year, there’s at least one New Year’s resolution Britons haven’t yet broken. According to new research by the AA, ‘save money’ is a January promise people have stuck to so far.
And the study shows that not only are more people saving, but compared with the first weeks of last year, they are also saving more.
If you want to become more frugal, there are plenty of simple, everyday changes you can make. Here are eight things you can do to save money every single day.
1. Make coffee cutbacks
Many people spend £2 on a takeaway coffee every working day. If you’re one of them, you could save yourself around £44 a month by making up a flask of coffee before you leave the house.
2. Shop around
Shopping around is one of the easiest ways to save money every day of the week. Use price comparison sites to find an item you’re after at the lowest possible price.
And when you’re looking for a financial product like a credit card or bank account, use a money comparison website to track down the best possible deal.
3. Get cashback
Earn money every time you make a purchase by using a credit card - like the American Express Platinum card - that offers cashback on purchases.
You can make even more money back by shopping via a cashback site like TopCashback or Quidco at the same time.
4. Fill a frugal lunchbox
Make yourself a packed lunch to take to work every day. You can easily do this for less than £1 - so if you’re currently spending £5 a day on a bought lunch, you could save around £88 a month.
6. Cut your energy costs
Gas and electricity can be a big daily drain on resources. Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to cut your energy costs, including switching suppliers, improving insulation and becoming more energy-efficient.

5. On your bike
Swapping your daily car, train or tube commute for an outing on your bicycle could save you well over £100 per month.
It should make you fitter as well - so you can cancel that pricy gym membership and save even more!
7. Keep a spending diary
If you’re struggling to make budget cuts, start a spending diary and write down every single purchase you make, every day.
This will give you a much better idea of where your money is going, so you can become more frugal.
8. Change your grocery habits
If your weekly food bill seems high, stop visiting the shops every day. Instead, plan your meals in advance and buy your groceries online.
This will mean you’re less tempted to make pricy impulse purchases. Grocery comparison site MySuperMarket will show you which supermarket has the goods you want at the lowest price.
