A growing number of people are choosing to share cars in an effort to cope with the rising cost of petrol, a car insurance provider has claimed.
Research by AA Insurance found that 47 per cent of people in the UK are now considering sharing their car.
Of those surveyed, 51 per cent said they would consider sharing vehicles because of rising petrol prices, while one-third suggested they may choose to do so to reduce emissions.
Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "Car sharing is something that we really believe in - not only is it a good way to reduce emissions and congestion on the road, but can also save on motoring costs."
However, motorists ought to ensure they have car insurance to have a "safe and pleasant" driving experience, he added.
Car insurance firm esure recently found that nearly a fifth of motorists its surveyed said they would be willing to pay more than £2 a litre for petrol to stay on the road.
