Motorists warned about car theft
12.08.2008
Motorists have been urged not to leave valuable items in their vehicles, following a number of thefts in Surrey.
Police in the area reported that expensive items, such as power tools, have been stolen from a number of parked vehicles.
One incident saw thieves make off with items worth £1,200, likely to have forced the owner to claim on their car insurance.
Sergeant Gary Pickett from Epsom's safer neighbourhood team said officers from the force were working to tackle incidents of theft in several crime "hotspots".
Motorists still need to "play their part", Sergeant Pickett said, urging people not to leave items in their cars.
"I am appealing to motorists to implement some simple crime reduction measures in order to reduce their chance of becoming the next victim of vehicle crime," he remarked.
Elsewhere, Avon and Somerset Police are launching a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of car crime.
The force is leaving a car containing expensive items, such as laptops and sat navs, at various locations around the region with accompanying posters to highlight the problem of theft.
