Police offer security advice
10.10.2008
To avoid having to make expensive claims on both their home and car insurance, householders may want to follow the advice issued by Cleveland police this week.
Officers in Hartlepool have warned people against leaving their windows and doors unlocked following a number of break-ins in the region.
Crime Prevention Officer Steve Davies said he was "concerned" by the number of burglaries at occupied homes recently.
"Since June, there have been 44 break-ins throughout the town, and in 32 of these cases doors or windows were left open or unlocked - making it easy for thieves to get in and steal property," he remarked.
However, people can minimise the risk of being burgled by ensuring their doors and windows are secured and they leave handbags and car keys away from points of entry and keep them out of sight.
People ought to consider taking them upstairs to bed with them, the officer said.
Meanwhile, Thames Valley police are appealing to residents to take simple security steps following a dramatic rise in "letterbox thefts".
Crime reduction adviser John Nicholas advised people to dead-lock their front doors.
