RIAS: Get cover if you're driving abroad

3.06.2008

People planning on packing the family up for a road trip across the continent this summer have been advised to make sure that they're properly insured before they go.

Over 50s insurance specialist RIAS has warned about the dangers of driving without adequate car insurance, particularly in a foreign country, which can land motorists with a hefty bill if they get into an accident.

Managing director of the company Janet Connor said that getting the correct car insurance and paperwork in order before a driving holiday abroad should be as essential as "remembering to pack your toothbrush".

Anyone hopping over the channel this summer should be extra careful on the roads because having a car towed home can cost as much as £1,000 and their car insurance may not cover them for it.

This follows similar advice from AA Ireland, which also told drivers to check their car insurance before taking a scenic tour of the Emerald Isle.
