Uninsured drivers costing other drivers

Lawful car insurance customers are having to pay for the mistakes of uninsured drivers, according to one expert.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said there are a large number of uninsured drivers in the UK.

This, the expert said, was down to the fact that car insurance can be expensive and people "think they can get away with it".

However, the impact on other motorists is significant, as the problem "costs everyone else a lot of money", Mr Trudgill claimed.

The body that provides assistance to people to the victims of uninsured drivers is paid for through insurance premiums, he explained.

Mr Trudgill commented: "There is a levy on every single motor insurance policy which adds up to around £500 million a year. And that means everyone is paying that extra £30 on their motor insurance."

The Motor Insurance Bureau recently reported that 150,000 uninsured cars were seized last year, which equated to a vehicle being taken off the road every three minutes.
