Using mobile while driving 'pushes up premiums'

16.07.2008

The average car insurance premium will increase by almost £40 a year as a result of a conviction for using a mobile phone while driving, according to research.

In addition, one car insurance provider even refused to provide a quote if there had been a mobile phone offence, the AA reported.

The motoring organisation said it was not surprised that a strict sentence has been brought in by the authorities for people convicted of the offence.

However, it added that while it will make the public think again about using their phone while driving, "many will still not be aware that their insurance premiums will rise".

The AA commented that "insurance companies are quite rightly taking an equally dim view of such offences".

Earlier this week, Tesco Personal Finance suggested many motorists are paying more for their car insurance policies because they are not shopping around for a better deal when their policies come up for renewal.
