Homeowners 'should improve home security'
17.07.2008
Homeowners have been urged to improve security measures in order to protect their properties from burglary.
Consumers have also been advised by Virgin Money to take out adequate home insurance.
The company cited figures which suggest around 22 per cent of people do not have any home contents insurance, while 38 per cent have no buildings insurance.
Virgin Money spokesman Grant Bather said: "Relying on insurance and simple security measures are the best ways to protect yourself and give peace of mind."
He commented that burglary rates are actually falling at present and that the "fear of crime is often a bigger risk than crime itself".
Earlier this week, research from Tesco Personal Finance suggested 2.5 million Britons have seen above-inflation rises in their home insurance premiums.
However, it found just over one in five of those affected has considered switching their home insurance policy to a different provider.
