Music and movie enthusiasts have been urged to consider whether their home insurance policies provide adequate cover for their downloads if their laptops or mp3 players are stolen.
Virgin Money has called on consumers to ensure their home insurance provider is aware of the music and film collections stored on such devices.
According to the firm, since 2004 there have been over 200 million legal music downloads in the UK.
Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money, warned: "More people are choosing to download music and films and as such, their computer will have a lot of information on it that if stolen, could be lost forever."
People ought to ensure that if their computer is damaged, lost or stolen their music and films can be restored, he advised.
Legal and General recently called on students to make sure they have adequate insurance for their electrical items.
Elaine Parkes, head of technical services at the firm, said some items, such as laptops, TVs and iPods may be considered "high risk" and required to be added to home contents policies.
