Life insurance "can be really valuable"

Despite providing financial protection, people often avoid taking out life insurance because they perceive it to be expensive, it has been claimed.

To address this, Barclays is offering a 15 per cent discount on new customers' life insurance premiums, as well as entries into a prize draw for £24,000.

Gary Duggan, managing director for consumer lending and insurance for Barclays, said life insurance "can be really valuable" but many people are put off by the cost.

"We've taken those barriers away and made it really easy to get you and your family covered by offering a competitive and reliable product that is simple to understand and easy to buy," Mr Duggan claimed.

Last month, Legal and General reported that 65 per cent of the people it surveyed over-estimated the cost of life insurance.

Karen Blatchford, commercial director for housing at the company, said families on a "very tight budget" ought to be able to afford life cover.
