According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported that there were 131,079 new cars and 20,997 commercial vehicles produced in July.

This brings the total produced for the year so far to 1,098,174, the society noted.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: "Car output rose by one per cent in July and is positive for the year to date."

The launch of Nissan's Qashqai+2 in the UK is expected to boost vehicle production the UK over the next few years, he added.

However, earlier this month the SMMT reported that demand for new cars among consumers had fallen in July.

Registrations in the new car market were down 13 per cent last month, reflecting what Mr Everitt described as the "continued deterioration in consumer confidence being experienced across the economy".
