Healthcare costs 'proving too much'

17.09.2008

Many people are struggling to meet the costs of healthcare costs, new research has revealed.

Engage Mutual Assurance reports that six in ten people cannot afford healthcare, of which 43 per cent said they could no longer pay for regular check-ups at the dentist.

A further 43 per cent said they could not afford new spectacles, while 20 per cent said they struggled to meet the costs of prescription charges.

Karl Elliott, spokesperson for Engage Mutual, said: "With the cost of living on the rise, our research shows a shocking number of people struggling to pay for some quite basic family healthcare necessities."

American Express reported this week that nearly half of Britons are planning to cut back on their financial outgoings, of which 27 per cent said they would no longer make payments to their health insurance provider.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by Bupa discovered that many people believe private medical insurance to be an important benefit offered by employers.
