Annoying holiday habits

 Annoying holiday habits

Avoid these ten blunders if you don’t want to irritate fellow travellers on your next holiday.

Let’s face it, some people out there can be pretty irritating. They get on our nerves in the supermarket, at work, even in our own homes. You might hope to get a break on holiday but they just find creative new ways to annoy us – this time wearing flip flops.

Online travel agent Sunshine.co.uk has conducted a poll of tourists to find the ten most frustrating holiday habits.

1. Poor poolside etiquette

Nothing antagonises holidaymakers more than sunbathers who reserve loungers by the pool.

If you’re among the 67 per cent of people irritated by this, follow my example. Move the offending towel, claim the lounger for yourself and pretend to be asleep when your rival returns.

2. Excessive noise

Other guests making too much noise is the biggest annoyance for more than 40 per cent of holidaymakers.

So try to keep it down next time you’re stumbling back at 3am after a few pitchers of sangria.

3. Drunken debauchery

This brings us to the third most annoying holiday habit. More than thirty per cent of tourists become frustrated by fellow guests who’ve had too much to drink.

4. Bad karaoke

You might think singing Hit Me Baby One More Time in a nightclub is harmless holiday fun but your audience could disagree. More than 20 per cent cite bad karaoke as the biggest holiday faux pas.

Remember, it’s a hotel bar not Britain’s Got Talent.

5. Cultural insensitivity

If you go abroad, respect the traditions of the country you’re visiting. Don’t turn your nose up at foreign food, laugh at accents or clamber across sites of religious significance. Otherwise you risk becoming unpopular with 19 per cent of tourists.

6. Holiday hermits

Should you avoid other tourists altogether for fear of getting on their nerves? Apparently there is no easy solution. Fifteen per cent of travellers cite unsociable guests as a pet hate on holiday.

7. A lovers’ tiff

Going on holiday can be the kiss of death for a romantic relationship. Imagine being stuck together for 15 hours on a long haul flight, then spending two weeks sharing a room.

No matter how much your other half is getting on your nerves, keep your squabbles private. Almost ten per cent of people believe public arguments are the most irritating holiday habit.

8. Stingy tippers

Even if you’re on a tight budget, try to leave a respectable tip in bars and restaurants. Bear in mind, you’ll probably visit the hotel bar more than once.

9. Not everyone loves a holiday romance

If you’re on holiday, chances are you have a hotel room so please go back up to it if you’re feeling amorous. Public displays of affection are a major turn off for three per cent of us.

10. Patriotic holidaywear

With the World Cup coming up, many of you might be tempted to don your England shirt on holiday. However, wearing patriotic clothing could earn you the disapproval of one per cent of holidaymakers.

For some, this kind of ensemble is better than no clothing. Seeing other women sunbathe topless annoys 12 per cent of female respondents who often worry their partner’s attention might stray.

If you want to have fun on holiday, the best idea might be to go to a deserted island or camp out alone in the wilderness where nobody else can annoy you. Bliss.
