 Eight crazy holiday mishaps

For many people, a holiday isn’t complete unless there’s something to complain about.

We’ve all heard ‘holiday from hell’ stories involving stolen luggage and people spending weeks in hospital after catching E.coli from the buffet.

Having enough travel insurance is a sensible way to protect yourself if something does go wrong on holiday.

With the holiday season just months away, now is the time to make sure you have the right kind of cover for your trip.

However, not all holiday mishaps are so serious. Online travel agent Sunshine.co.uk hears some outrageous complaints from customers.

1. Holiday hangover

Most people blame themselves after waking up on holiday with a hangover – not this couple. Feeling a little fragile after a few lunchtime cocktails, they insisted the drinks in their resort were too alcoholic.

2. A roving eye

More than two thirds of couples who break up on holiday do so because their partner has eyed up someone else on the beach.

One man was dumped after buying a pair of mirrored sunglasses to prevent his other half seeing where he was looking.

3. Suitcase scandal

Travel insurance doesn’t normally cover this kind of lost luggage. One disgruntled flyer told his travel agent there were too many plain black suitcases on the carousel – making it difficult to find his.

4. Too hot to handle

After visiting a local theme park, a woman complained her feet had got wet on the log flume ride and the hot sun had caused her ice cream to melt too quickly.

5. Brits abroad

Spain may have once been a top holiday destination for Brits but it’s now falling out of favour with some tourists. With the high number of English tourists and bars, many holiday makers felt Spain was ‘not foreign enough.’

6. Toiletry trauma

A woman was furious when a bottle of shampoo she had packed in her suitcase leaked on her belongings. She claimed she wouldn’t have packed shampoo if she had known her hotel offered complimentary toiletries.

On the bright side, she may have been able to claim on her travel insurance for damage to her personal affects.

7. Not enough time travelling

Changing flights is a major inconvenience and most of us would be glad if it took only 20 minutes. One couple were irritated that such a brief transfer time didn’t give them enough opportunity to explore the sights of the island.

The thousands of people stranded by the recent volcanic ash cloud probably didn’t feel the same way.

8. Penny pinching

Over 40 per cent of those who had ended a relationship during a holiday said their partner’s stinginess was a factor in the break up. Searching around for the cheapest restaurant was a particular bone of contention.
