Frugal summer fun
Where can you go this summer if you’re planning on staying in the UK to cut costs?
According to research from debt help body R3, more than half of Brits who want to reduce holiday costs are planning on in staying the UK this summer. A quarter of respondents said they would not be taking a holiday at all this year.
If you’ve become accustomed to two weeks abroad, how would you cope with a staycation? We suggest some frugal – and even free – alternatives if you’re staying on home soil this summer.
Visit a film location
If you’re a movie buff, you could visit the location of a film you have particularly enjoyed.
Fans of Harry Potter could check out Alnwick Castle in Northumbria which became Hogwarts academy in the first two films. If your tastes are a little more erudite, the castle was also used as the location for Elizabeth. For details of admission costs, visit the castle website.
James Bond fans could head down to Holywell Bay and the Eden Project in Cornwall to see the location of Die Another Day.
Free Festivals
If you live in London or you’re planning a trip to the capital, you could drop in on the National Theatre’s Watch This Space Festival. It includes outdoor theatre, dancing, circus, dance and film events. If you would like to attend, the festival runs until 26 September.
Snorkeling
You don’t have to jet off to a tropical paradise to test the water with snorkeling. There are a number of UK spots if you want to don your wetsuit.
Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset is a popular site and if you don’t fancy snorkeling, you could go fossil hunting in the bay. Visitors to Scotland could check out the marine life in The Caves, Long Loch.

National Heritage Open Days
It might be just at the end of summer but these are a fantastic option for amateur historians.
Between 9 and 12 September, National Heritage provides free access to historical properties that are normally closed to the public or charge an admission fee – from churches to disused factories. You can also take part in tours and events devoted to local architecture.
To learn more about events near you, check out the Heritage Open Day website
Theme park fun
For many parents, taking the kids to a theme park is a summer ritual. If you’re planning on braving roller coasters and junk food during the school holidays, you might as well do it as cheaply as possible.
