Travel insurance 'provides peace of mind'
In addition to taking out appropriate travel insurance, tourists were advised by American Express to leave a photocopy of important documents at home in case family need to assist in the event of a problem.
The company also suggested holidaymakers should email themselves their travel insurance details and any important phone numbers so they will be able to access them overseas.
Kirstie Bayley, vice-president of American Express Travellers Cheques, commented that a theft "can ruin the perfect holiday".
She added: "The last thing people want when they are on holiday is to worry about the safety of their money and belongings."
Research from Sainsbury's Bank last month revealed up to 15 per cent of British adults have never travelled abroad.
Announcing its findings, the company advised holidaymakers of the importance to take out appropriate travel insurance even when travelling in the UK.
