What’s the perfect holiday?
Discover how most Brits would spend their dream holiday and see how travel insurance mishaps could shatter that dream.
Online travel agent sunshine.co.uk surveyed almost 2,000 people to uncover what defines a dream holiday.
If we could go anywhere in the world, we would choose the Seychelles with 21 per cent of us citing this as the ideal destination.
Warm weather is also high on the holiday wish list as a sunny 28°c is thought to be the ideal temperature. For accommodation, a private villa came top and 59 per cent of people would like to be within 100 metres of the beach.
While most of us are lucky if we can get a fortnight away each year, the respondents believed three weeks would be ideal.
Despite 98 per cent of holidaymakers preferring an all inclusive deal, 76 per cent would go for dinner every night. Hmm wonder what else could attract people to the all inclusive…?
Asked how much spending money they would require ‘within reason’, more than 80 per cent said £1,000.
Whether this is your idea of a dream holiday or not, mishaps can happen. Here are some common travel insurance mistakes that could ruin your holiday and end up costing you a fortune.
As those lucky enough to be able to afford a holiday this year start to plan their getaway, we thought we’d see how much you know about common holiday rip offs.
The 24 hour rule
If you are the victim of a crime while on holiday and want to claim on your insurance, you will need to provide evidence that you have reported the crime to the proper authorities.
Many insurance policies also require you to obtain a report from the police within 24 hours of the incident.
Straying too far
When travelling abroad, you could end up regretting taking a diversion to a region where you aren’t covered.
Some parts of the world are inherently riskier than others – possibly due to tropical diseases or a high risk of terrorism. This means travel insurance premiums for these regions are usually more expensive.
If you visit somewhere you’re not covered, your insurance will not protect you against any accidents or damages to your property.
Being an adrenaline junkie
If you’re brave enough to take part in any extreme sports on holiday, you should make sure you have read the terms and conditions of your insurance policy thoroughly. Many standard policies won’t cover you for relatively common holiday activities such as sky diving and white water rafting.
Travellers planning to take part in these activities may need to purchase specialist cover.
Too much alcohol
Whenever we think of Brits abroad, we imagine beer and cocktails. While alcohol can help you unwind, it’s also an ingredient in plenty of holiday disasters.
Not only could excessive alcohol consumption end in a trip to a foreign A&E, you could easily invalidate your travel insurance. Imagine you injured yourself skiing or snorkelling and your insurance discovered you had been drinking, it could decide you had been negligent and refuse to pay out.
