ABTA: Adventurous holidays without insurance are 'very foolish'

15.05.2008

People planning an adventurous holiday without travel insurance are being "very foolish", the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has said.

Although holidaymakers may be able to save "£30 or £40" by not purchasing an insurance policy, they could face having to pay thousands of pounds if they are injured while abroad, according to Sean Tipton, the press officer at ABTA.

Mr Tipton said that in a "worst case scenario", an uninsured holidaymaker who breaks a leg skiing in the US may have to pay a medical bill for tens of thousands of dollars. This could reach a hundred thousand dollars if the person has to be flown home to the UK in an air ambulance.

A recent Foreign Office survey found that 65 per cent of over 55-year-olds did not take out travel insurance for their last holiday.

"If you're going on a holiday which involves greater risk, such as an adventure holiday, or going to do something that is potentially risky without insurance, then it is incredibly irresponsible," said Mr Tipton.
