Holidaymakers 'neglect to buy travel insurance'

New research has shown that many British holidaymakers have not taken out travel insurance this summer, with some claiming they cannot afford cover.
The study conducted by Sainsbury's Finance found 13.4 million people do not plan to take out travel insurance for their summer holiday this year.
According to the report, 18 per cent of holidaymakers said they could not afford to meet the cost of cover, while 31 per cent claimed they did not need to take it out.
Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury's Finance, argued that travel insurance is a "holiday essential".
"Although in the current climate people are understandably looking at ways to reduce their outgoings, insurance is one thing that should not be omitted," he asserted.
Travel insurance is especially important for those embarking on an adventure holiday or gap year, STA Travel claimed.
A spokesperson for the company said although it can seem like an "unnecessary extra cost", insurance is the "wisest purchase you can make".
