'One in five' go without travel insurance

16.07.2008

One in five Britons have admitted they do not take out adequate travel insurance every time they head off on holiday, it has been reported.

People travelling abroad should be aware that treatment for a broken leg can cost up to £7,000 in European countries, swiftcover.com said.

The organisation noted the locations where accidents are most likely to occur on holiday are roads, beaches and hotels.

Marketing director of swiftcover.com, Tina Shortle, commented that younger holidaymakers can be the highest-risk groups.

She said: "We are encouraging teens to be prepared and stay safe so their holiday can be one to remember for all the right reasons."

American Express recently advised holidaymakers that appropriate travel insurance will provide them with the peace of mind that their belongings will be replaced in the event of a theft while overseas.

The company recommended that tourists email themselves their travel insurance policy documents so they will be easily accessible while on holiday.
