14.07.2008
Only one in five British holidaymakers take out travel insurance policies which cover them in the event of holiday loss due to illness, the Halifax reports.
However, its research finds nearly one in three Brits have suffered from an upset stomach or "Delhi belly" at some point in their travels.
Only approximately one in five travellers take out any kind of travel insurance, it adds.
Halifax Travel Insurance spokesperson Vicky Watson says: "Our research reveals that nearly one in five Brits had to visit a local hospital when on holiday as a result of food poisoning, which is not fun."
She advised holidaymakers to do some research into their destination online and take out appropriate travel insurance before they set off.
Last week, American Express reminded holidaymakers that travel insurance provides the peace of mind their belongings can be replaced in the event of a theft overseas.
It also recommended travellers should leave photocopies of all important documents at home, in case family or friends need to assist in the event of a problem abroad.
