Travel insurance "has never been so cheap"

17.10.2008

Cheaper travel insurance policies than ever before are now available, according to one report.

A year's travel insurance policy can be bought for as little as £30, explains Sharon Griffiths in an article for the Northern Echo.

Despite this, "thousands of daft people" do not take out travel insurance when going on holiday, she comments.

Ms Griffiths points out that a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will pay for medical care, but not taxis, phone calls, hotel bills or new flight tickets home.

"If you're travelling outside Europe then you're absolutely crazy to think of doing so without insurance," she adds.

The Department of Health describes travel insurance as "vital" and urges holidaymakers to ensure their EHIC is valid.

Not having either in place puts people at "unnecessary risk" says overseas healthcare programme manager Paul Siddell.

According to the department three million EHICs will expire before the end of March next year.

They were introduced to replace the E111 form three years ago and entitle Britons to reduced cost or free state-provided health care in most European countries.ADNFCR-1717-ID-18831493-ADNFCR
