Energy firm increases prices

1.09.2008

Gas and electricity customers may be affected by the news that one of the country's largest energy providers is raising its prices.

Last week, npower said its gas prices would be increasing by an average of 26 per cent, while electricity bills were likely to be going up by 14 per cent.

The company said this would represent a £162 annual increase in gas and £60 rise in electricity prices for its customers.

Giuseppe Di Vita, managing director of npower, said: "I'm sorry we've had to increase our prices - and we’ve made this decision extremely reluctantly, especially as household budgets are being squeezed so much at the moment."

The company will provide assistance to customers who struggle to pay their bills, he added.

Scottish and Southern Electricity recently increased its own gas and electricity prices in the wake of rising wholesale costs.

It announced its gas and electricity prices would be rising by 29.2 per cent and 19.2 per cent respectively.
