Households urged to ditch dial-up

3.09.2008

More than one million households in the UK are still relying on slow and expensive dial-up internet connections, it has been claimed.

According to BroadbandChoices.co.uk, 1.48 million households use dial-up connections and could be paying more each year for the service than if they had broadband access.

The firm reported that the cheapest dial-up - AOL Anytime - connection costs £175.89 a year, compared with £89.87 for TalkTalk, which is the least expensive broadband service.

Michael Phillips, production director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said there some people prefer the "pay-as-you-go" rate offered by dial-up connections and the fact that they do not need to sign up to a minimum contract.

He commented: "However the most common reason for sticking with an inferior service is simply customer inertia. People wouldn't think twice about shopping around for their gas or electricity supplier, so why not broadband?"

However, ConsumerChoices.co.uk recently claimed many people were still unhappy with the broadband service they receive.

It noted that those in rural areas often have to pay more for slower internet access.
