Landlords urged to become energy-efficient
10.10.2008
Energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for tenants, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
Nancy Baynes, spokesperson for the trust, said it is "vital" that rental properties are made as energy-efficient as possible.
"An energy-efficient home with lower running-costs will be much more appealing to prospective tenants," Ms Baynes asserted.
Private tenants can save as much as £700 a year on their energy bills if their landlord installs "straightforward" energy-saving measures, she commented.
All landlords should see the introduction of energy performance certificates as an "opportunity not a challenge", she added.
The London Climate Change Group states that there are a number of incentives for landlords to make their properties more energy-efficient.
In addition to grants for new boilers and insulation, the Landlords Energy Saving Allowance enables property owners to claim money back on the cost of installing insulation from their tax bill.
From this month, landlords in England and Wales need to show energy performance certificates when letting out properties.
