BeatThatQuote.com Guide to Home Telephone Deals

Use the below guide to find out all the information you will need to know when deciding on the home telephone supplier and tariff to choose for you.

Types of home telephone line

There are two main types of home telephone lines you can have installed into your house;

  • BT landlines - you can rent your home telephone line from BT or a number of other providers, through what is called wholesale line rental. You will pay a month fee of around £11 to whichever supplier you rent your telephone line from.
  • Cable landlines - these are available to households in big towns and cities. If you decide to take your telephone calls through a cable company you will not need a BT line. Cable companies normally install cable lines for free, although you will be tied into a contract, normally around 12 months.

Home telephone line rental

A home telephone contract has two main elements to it. Firstly there is the monthly rental fee you pay to the telephone provider you rent your line from. There is the option to just pay this fee, and pay for any calls you make, on a per minute or per second rate, dependant on provider. The second part is to add a home telephone tariff on top of your monthly line rental for an extra monthly fee. This tariff can include free telephone call, texts, broadband or other add on extras. There are four main types of home telephone tariffs you can sign up for.

Types of home telephone tariff

  • No added monthly charge - has no additional monthly fee, you just pay for the calls you make.
  • Evening and Weekend - small additional monthly fee. For that you receive free calls to UK landlines during the evening and at weekends.
  • Evening and Weekend - small additional monthly fee. For that you receive free calls to UK landlines during the evening and at weekends

Types of home telephone tariff cont.

  • Anytime - pay a larger additional monthly fee and get free calls to UK landlines at all times. Some packages now include some calls to specified international destinations.
  • Weekend Calls - these tariffs offer cheaper or free calls during weekend periods.

When deciding the best tariff to suit your needs, you should consider the times of the day you most use the home telephone, and the destinations you call. By doing this you will be able to choose the tariff that most suits you home telephone usage.

Call costs from a landline

Call costs from a home telephone line are dependant on the telephone provider and tariff you choose. Prices also vary depending on;

  • The day you make the call - weekends tend to have cheaper rates than week days
  • The time you make the call - off peak evening rates tend to be cheaper than day time peak rates
  • The destination of the call - calls to UK landline calls tend to be the cheapest destination, on some plans they are included within the monthly cost. Calls to UK mobiles and international destinations are often the most expensive destinations

Ofcom

Ofcom is the organisation that regulates the UK telecoms industry. Its job is to monitor the companies that provider home telephone, mobile telephone, broadband, TV and radio services to consumers in the UK.

If you have problems with your home telephone service that you cannot resolve with your supplier you should visit the Ofcom website for advice and assistance on how you can resolve the situation. You are also able to make a complaint if you are unhappy with the treatment you have received.
